Training Walk 5th Dec 2021

After the completion of my Lowland Leader Qualification the excitement and enthusiasm is still here so I decided to go full force into a training walk, and see what I can do in 2 hours.

Osprey Rook 65l with Rain Cover

I was also trying out an early Christmas present of a new backpack, the Osprey Rook 65L in green. The Rook is a great combination of a quality pack, a great carry frame and a budget friendly price. I loaded it up with some bits of gear and an 8KG kettlebell to make it a bit more realistic to a full load carry.

I set my watch and HRM away and went 1 hour down the Deerness Valley Railway path, using walking poles and a wireless headphone to listen to the We Need More Heros podcast (Now called The Call to Adventure podcast) for company.

The 1 hour turning point

The paths were pretty flooded as it was the day after a pretty big storm, I got wet feet.

In total I complete around 6 miles in 2 hours 20 mins.

Lessons Learned:

  • Re-Waterproof my boots – done
  • Pack the Rook fully with camping gear
  • Buy better waterproof gear – done
